PNS CT in Symptomatic Patients without Mucosal Abnormality: The relationship between anatomic variations and symptoms

Abstract
Out of 492 patients with consecutive coronal sinus CT scans performed for evaluation of sinus disease symptoms, 82 symptomatic patients showed no mucosal abnormality on CT. CT findings of these 82 symptomatic patients without mucosal abnormality
were
reviewed and compared with those of the control group which consisted of 88 consecutive cases with facial trauma, to analyze the anatomic variations. The anatomic variations were demonstrated in 71 out of 82 symptomatic patients(86.5%), whereas
they
were seen in 26 of 88 patients(29.5%) in control group. the anatomic variations included nasoseptal deviation, concha bullosa, Haller cells, Agger nasi cells, etc,
Anatomic variations may obstruct or narrow the airway, leading to turbulating air flow or interrupting mucociliary movement, and finally may produce a series of symptoms.
The data suggest that there is a possible causal relationship between anatomic variations and symptoms. Even though not accompaning mucosal abnormalities, anatomic variations could contribute simply to its symptoms.
